Primers – Do I Really Need Them?

BeautyMay 18, 2018by Tracey Jackson Comments

I’ve had some really great feedback on the makeup video Cedric and I did. I promised I would do a full product breakdown for all budget and lifestyles.

Makeup is not for everyone. I get that. Plenty of people don’t want to be bothered. They are happy where they are in life and spending an extra hour of their time smearing creams and colors on their skin is unappealing.

And then there are people like me who feel less dressed if I am makeupless than if I am clothesless.

What on earth is a primer and why the F do I need it?  Let’s face it when we started using makeup there was no primer. Maybe in Hollywood, but not in the real world. There was foundation and powder end of story.

But now there are primers for everything, primers to minimize pores, primers to even out skin tone, primers to make you look dewy and glowy and primers that turn you into a Geisha.

I would say before twenty or thirty unless you have real skin issues primers are not a necessity  After forty and then on up to the hinter-ages – prime that face.

The thing about primers is this, you do not need ten in your makeup kit. I have way too many and I get confused by them all. But I try them out so I can report back to you.

If you have sun spots and uneven color then get a primer that evens out skin tone. If you feel lackluster and kind of drab use a primer with a bit of a highlighter in it. If you want to go chemical free use a primer that is more natural.

You can get away with one, but if you really want to cover your priming bases you can do one for the day and one for the night.

The one we used in the video is ~

Tatcha Silk Canvas Primer

The description is  A velvety priming balm of pressed silk that smooths and makes makeup last longer while keeping it out of the skin, helping to prevent clogged pores and breakouts.

Solutions for:
– Pores
– Oiliness
– Dullness and uneven texture

That would be a lot of primer for your buck. And truth be told if I had to pick one primer for life, this would be the one.  It  makes you look kind of flawless no matter what your age or skin type.  It’s not cheap, but there is a lot of product in the container and you don’t need much. I’m putting the link here as it is not available on Shopify where all the others can be found.

It’s at Sephora for $52.00

Jane Iredale Smooth Affair

‘Facial Primer and Brightener.” Iredale is one of the original all-natural brands. I love this product. It works and my skin feels very clean when I use it.  I reach for it quite often and I think for a natural smooth look this is the ticket.

I added the one for oily skin at the end. Having always had dry skin, I forget people get oily.

Hourglass Ambient Light

After Tatcha this is the my fav.  Any kind of light catching molecules makes a big difference. Hourglass both catches the light and evens out your skin.   I have tried others with a purplish tint, but this one surpasses them all by far.

Too Faced Hangover RX

A very popular primer with You Tubers. You Tubers tend not to be over thirty. I have used it and it’s fine. For the price, you get a decent primer. It does a job. It does not set off any bells or whistles. You will not find yourself crazy about it, but it’s totally adequate.

Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow

If the You Tubers go for Too Faced, the makeup artists love Charlotte Tilbury. And her primer a cult favorite. It does give a nice dewy glow and you can use under as primer, over as finish and if you’re super young you can use it on its own.

NYX PRIMER

Drugstore brand that is very popular.  Great price and if you want something that gives you a nice little glaze over your face this one is perfect. For $14 hard to go wrong.

BECCA UNDER EYE PRIMER

Hey, you can put primer on your primer. Becca makes an under eye primer that supposedly makes your concealer last longer and evens out your wrinkles. I was suckered into this. I forget to use it most days, which means deep down I probably don’t like it that much. If you are really needing to buy something – go ahead. But even priming has its limits.

NATASHA DENONA LIFTING PRIMER -ANTI-AGING SERUM

It’s a tall order for 1.01 fluid ounces of primer. It’s a fine primer. It’s on the pricey side of the spectrum. She makes a good product. I used it until it was done and I doubt I will buy more. I would go home with the Hourglass before I would invest in this one. Though if you like the idea that something is doing more than it might be this could be for you.

NEXT WEEK FOUNDATION!
